The American Society for Reproductive Medicine mourns the passing of Stuart S. Howards, MD, a distinguished urologist, educator, and longtime ASRM member whose contributions to reproductive medicine and professional leadership helped shape the field. Dr. Howards passed away peacefully on October 4, 2026, at the age of 89.

S.Howards.webpBorn in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Dr. Howards earned his undergraduate degree from Yale University and his medical degree from Columbia University. He completed his surgical and urology training at Brigham and Women's Hospital of Harvard University and conducted research in renal and cardiovascular physiology at the National Institutes of Health. He went on to join the University of Virginia School of Medicine, where he spent more than four decades advancing urologic medicine through clinical practice, research, and education.

A respected authority in male reproductive medicine, Dr. Howards made significant contributions to Fertility and Sterility and served as Editor-in-Chief of Investigative Urology for more than 15 years. His expertise, scholarship, and commitment to teaching helped shape generations of urologists and reproductive medicine specialists.

Dr. Howards was equally dedicated to professional service. A decades-long member of ASRM, he served as the Society's Treasurer for 15 years, providing leadership and guidance during an important period in its history. In recognition of his contributions, ASRM honored him with its Distinguished Service Award in 2004.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Howards was remembered as a dedicated mentor, compassionate physician, and devoted family man. Known by his family for his sense of humor, he brought warmth and wit to those around him. He also instilled in his children and grandchildren the importance of generosity and compassion, values reflected throughout his personal and professional life.

Dr. Howards was preceded in death by his wife, Carter Howards. He is survived by his children, Penelope "Penny" and Hugh; daughter-in-law, Alyssa; granddaughters, Nina and Sage; and sister, Judith Helburn.

ASRM extends its deepest condolences to Dr. Howards' family, friends, and colleagues. His decades of service, commitment to education, and contributions to reproductive medicine leave a lasting legacy within the Society and the broader medical community.
