Advocacy Now! For ASRM Members
Advancing reproductive care, lobbying the nation’s leaders, expanding access to essential fertility treatments… In the world of reproductive medicine today, there is no shortage of tasks. The ASRM Office of Public Affairs has compiled this resource to make advocacy simple for our busy members. Read on to learn how you use your expertise to advocate with ease and get back to helping patients build the families they dream of.
1. Sign up for ASRM Action Alerts.
We send Action Alerts to our members to inform them of legislation affecting IVF and reproductive rights in their state and at the federal level. This allows you to quickly forge a relationship with your representative, which is strengthened over time as you continue to advocate in writing or face-to-face.
When you see an Action Alert in your inbox or on our socials, click on the link provided to act. Our system makes calling, emailing, and tagging your reps easier than ever. If you’re a member and you aren’t receiving our action alerts, let us know at publicaffairs@asrm.org. If you prefer to skip the inbox, you can sign up to receive action alerts via text.
2. Take action on socials.
Make sure you’re following us across social media platforms, including Instagram, X, Bluesky, and LinkedIn. We share news, events, and other relevant information daily from the world of reproductive medicine and invite you to interact with these posts or create your own. We periodically run social media campaigns featuring a call to action for advocates and encourage all interested parties to join in. See patient and provider submissions for the recent #IVFdelivers campaign under our Instagram highlights.
3. Sign up to meet with or host your legislator or a member of their staff.
The Office of Public Affairs is prepared to help ASRM member advocates meet with their legislators and make a case for policies that expand access to IVF and reproductive medicine. You may also invite your representative to tour your place of work so they can gain a fuller understanding of what reproductive medicine truly entails. Apply to meet with your lawmaker directly with support from our government affairs professionals.
4. Apply for PRIMED!
Perhaps you want to use your voice for large-scale change but aren’t sure where to start. The Preparing Experts in Reproductive Medicine to Engage Decisionmakers (PRIMED) program was launched in 2024 and has helped three incredible cohorts of ASRM members bloom into strong advocates for transformative IVF policy and critical reproductive medicine legislation. Over the course of ten weeks, participants engage with course modules centered on the fundamentals of the legislative process and persuasive advocacy and social media communication, all culminating in a Hill trip to meet their representatives and a Capstone project presentation at the annual ASRM Congress & Expo. Applications for the fourth PRIMED cohort open in October. Learn more about becoming a PRIMED scholar here.
5. Visit us at the Public Affairs Booth in October!
The Office of Public Affairs staffs an interactive booth at the ASRM Congress & Expo each year, where we highlight our latest advocacy activities, share a year-end video reel, and, yes, give out sperm pens and other ASRM swag. Whether you want candy or conversation, we’re ready to welcome you. Register to attend Congress 2026 and come see your friends in the OPA!
6. Tell us your good news!
We can all use a positive, morale-boosting story from time to time. Tell us what’s going right in your personal or professional life—or in the life of a friend, family member, or colleague—at this link, and, with your permission, we’ll share it on socials. (Bonus points if it’s about a new baby or pet!)
7. Attend Federal Advocacy Day.
Each May, ASRM and RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association join forces to arrange meetings between providers, patients, and advocates and their representatives and staff to discuss the importance of expanding access to IVF for Americans. Improving access to family-building technologies is a bipartisan issue, and hearing testimony directly from experts and patients makes a significant impact on the attitudes of lawmakers. All meetings are staffed by a representative from ASRM or and optional training sessions are held leading up to the event. Learn more about past Federal Advocacy Days and consider joining us for future events.
8. Commemorate National Infertility Awareness Week in April!
National Infertility Awareness Week (NIAW) is a prime opportunity for advocates to raise awareness for infertility, a disease that affects 1 in 6 people the world over. Participants are encouraged to dress up in orange for awareness, participate in the Proclamation Project, submit a request for a landmark lighting, and take to social media to share why NIAW is important to them. NIAW 2027 will take place Sunday, April 18 to Saturday, April 24. Learn more about the intensive week of advocacy and what involvement looks like here.
9. Let us know how else you’d like to get involved.
Are you a “testify before Congress” advocate or more of a “write a letter and make a call” supporter? We understand that advocacy isn’t one-size-fits-all. Let us know what form of advocacy you’re most comfortable being involved in, and we will tune you into any relevant opportunities that come up. Click here to tell us your level of interest and availability. Is there an advocacy event or opportunity in your area that you’d like to make us aware of? We want to know about it!
10. Keep up with emails from the Office of Public Affairs!
The OPA sends email alerts to membership with advocacy opportunities in the form of attending town halls, contributing to awareness campaigns, sharing new CPL resources, providing expert comment on federal rules, and more. If your inbox is typically flooded and you don’t want to miss alerts from ASRM, search for emails from publicaffairs@asrm.org from time to time.
