National Academies issue report on Federal Support for Women’s Health Research
December 13, 2024
For immediate release
The National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine has issued an important report,” A New Vision for Women’s Health.” The Congressionally mandated report calls for expanded funding, support, oversight, and accountability for women’s health research throughout NIH and urges the creation of a new institute on Women’s health research. To accomplish these goals, the report calls for a funding increase of nearly $16 billion.
Despite an increase in overall funding for NIH in recent years, the percentage of funding devoted to women’s health has slipped to less than 8%. The report points to the significant knowledge gaps for women across their lifespans, from pregnancy through menopause, as well as the paucity of quality studies available to use to develop evidence-based treatment guidelines for conditions like PCOS or endometriosis.
ASRM is grateful for the work of NASEM on this very important topic and calls on Congress and NIH to carefully evaluate and implement its substantive and financial recommendations.
