ASRM Center for Policy & Leadership Releases Fact Sheet on Safety of IVF for Pregnant People and Babies
March 20, 2025
For immediate release
“IVF is, for many trying to conceive, the most effective form of assisted reproduction,” said Rebecca O’Connor, director of the CPL. “IVF is an extraordinary medical advancement that is safe, effective, and regulated like any other field of medicine in the United States.”
The fact sheet includes information on the safety and efficacy of IVF as a medical procedure, and addresses the possibility that underlying and preexisting health conditions can impact the wellbeing of pregnant people and their babies, including hypertension, diabetes, thyroid disorders, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), and more. Consequently, many IVF pregnancies involve heightened monitoring—including routine ultrasound exams and blood tests—so that complications may be immediately addressed if they arise.
