William "Bud" R. Keye Jr., MD
Dr. William R. “Bud” Keye Jr., 81, of Park City, Utah, passed away on April 10, 2025. A Past President of ASRM (2001-2002), his career highlights include being one of the original members of the In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) Department at the University of Utah (1979-1990) and teaching physicians gynecologic laser surgery around the globe.
Born in Long Island, NY, Dr. Keye grew up in St. Paul, MN where he attended the University of Minnesota for an undergraduate degree in zoology and then medical school. He completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Michigan and a fellowship in Reproductive Medicine/Infertility at the University of California San Francisco. He then served two years as a physician at Barksdale Air Force Base in Bossier City, LA.
In the latter half of his career, Dr. Keye served as the Director of the Reproductive Endocrinology Department at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, MI, from 1990-2009 before returning to the University of Utah to mentor residents and fellows until 2016. He formed deep ties with many of his residents and fellows throughout the years and enjoyed hosting them for ski vacations in his Park City, UT, home. He was inspired to work in the field of infertility after seeing his medical school friend struggle with starting a family.
His most meaningful work was educating the public about infertility and reproductive health issues. He enjoyed speaking at local churches, schools, Planned Parenthood, and on local television and radio stations in Utah and Michigan. In 2000, he received an award from Detroit Public Television for his contributions to women's health and well-being. He believed that every woman deserves access to good reproductive care and information.
Dr. Keye was a loving family man who enthusiastically supported his kids' endeavors. In his later years, he most enjoyed spending time with his grandkids, Aidan and Olivia. He gladly supported his wife, Sue, who had a progressive neurologic disorder for the last 25 years of her life, being her medical advocate and doting husband; an inspiration for many. His hobbies included skiing, golfing, cooking, traveling, and watching a good basketball game.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sue, his mother, Elizabeth, his father, William, and his brother, Stephen. He is survived by his children, Deborah (Dave) and Jeffery (Nicole), his grandkids, Aidan and Olivia, his sister, Linda, and his partner, Patricia Irwin Johnston.
