Philip I. McNamee, MD

Philip-McNamee.webp The American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) honors the life and legacy of Dr. Philip I. McNamee, who passed away peacefully on September 29, 2024, at the age of 88. A past president of the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART) and an engaged member of ASRM, Dr. McNamee is remembered not only for his career and accomplishments but also for the love, laughter, and wisdom he shared with others.

Born on May 11, 1936, in Charleston, West Virginia, Dr. McNamee earned his undergraduate studies in Chemistry at Northwestern University and pursued his graduate degree from Stanford University School of Medicine. After completing his medical training, he served as a physician in the United States Army, where he was stationed in Texas, Hawaii, California, and Japan. He was honorably discharged as a Major in 1970.

Following his military service, Dr. McNamee began practicing obstetrics and gynecology in Honolulu, Hawaii, where he later became a founding partner of the Pacific In Vitro Fertilization Institute. As a reproductive endocrinologist, he was committed to helping families grow, one patient at a time.

Outside of his medical career, Dr. McNamee was deeply engaged with the arts and his local community. He served on the boards of Ballet Hawaii and the Hawaii Opera Theatre and took joy in performing for many years in the Nutcracker Ballet as the grandfather. He also enjoyed playing the ukulele, singing with the Silver Foxes, and participating in tennis, golf, and table tennis. Travel was another great passion that he shared with his beloved wife, Carol, with whom he explored nearly every continent.

Dr. McNamee is survived by Carol, his wife of 64 years; daughter Carolyn Sandrolini; son Philip McNamee Jr. (Michele); five grandchildren—Gabriel Sandrolini, Madeleine Sandrolini, Emma Sandrolini Tersini (Raymond), Samuel McNamee, and Evan McNamee; and sister-in-law, Ann McNamee. He was preceded in death by his brother, Raymond McNamee.
