Fertility & Sterility Publishes New Study Validating IVF Data Accuracy of a National Commercial Claims Database, Comparable with National IVF Registries
Findings Support Use of Database by Policymakers Considering IVF Insurance Mandates, Employers Considering IVF Coverage Policy Expansion, and more

Washington, DC—Fertility and Sterility published a new study, "Using National IVF Registries to Validate Clinical Outcomes Following IVF Covered by Health Insurance." The study involved an evaluation of in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles covered by health insurance using a national commercial claims database, Clinformatics Data Mart (CDM), and compared key clinical events against national IVF registries. The results showed that CDM can be used with accuracy to identify IVF cycles covered by insurance and key clinical outcomes, such as rates of pregnancies, live births, and live birth types. Furthermore, the results demonstrated that CDM is an accurate and comprehensive data source with many potential use cases by a broad array of stakeholders.
“Our findings support the use of a national commercial claims database to support research about IVF insurance coverage and measure the impact of new or existing policies,” said David Suh, MPH, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Michigan. “For so many individuals and couples facing infertility, IVF remains the most viable or only option for growing their families, but without health insurance coverage, the high cost of treatment can be a real barrier to accessing comprehensive reproductive care. Our evaluation builds credibility for a national commercial claims database as a tool for policymakers and employers to research, model and understand how more expansive IVF insurance coverage could affect tens of thousands of Americans.”

Currently, only a handful of states have health insurance mandates to cover IVF and fertility preservation.
