ASRM CPL Releases New Report: Changes Ahead: Abortion Policy Proposals Affecting Reproductive Medicine

By: ASRM
Origin: ASRM Press Release

As lawmakers and officials across the nation develop a laser focus on curtailing access to abortion care, this report highlights the potential and known impact of these policy measures on the practice of and patients’ access to critical reproductive medicine, including fertility treatments such as in vitro fertilization (IVF).
These policy measures include state abortion bans, new restrictions on access to abortion care, a national campaign to remove abortion medication from the market, and out-of-the-box approaches to limit access to abortion. Contemporaneously, abortion access advocates are proposing reforms to protect those who seek and provide this safe, proven medical treatment.
This report spotlights recent efforts to both restrict or protect abortion care and, more broadly, to describe the impact of these policies on the practice of reproductive medicine. Importantly, this overview of state activities is not exhaustive, as hundreds of pieces of legislation, ballot measures, executive actions, and court cases continue to shape and redefine access to reproductive medicine including abortion care.
“This important report is another opportunity for the Center for Policy and Leadership to inform policy makers, ASRM members, the media, and patients regarding how such proposals affect access to reproductive medicine and treatments for diseases such as infertility. ASRM will continue to closely monitor and respond to these proposed measures on both the state and federal level and the CPL will continue to provide timely updates.” – Becca O’Connor, Director, ASRM Center for Policy and Leadership.
