Kamran S. Moghissi, M.D.

ASRM is sad to have learned of the passing of Kamran Moghissi, M.D. on December 12, 2021. Dr. Moghissi had an extremely distinguished career in reproductive medicine as an innovative researcher.

Originally born in Tehran, Iran, Dr. Moghissi graduated from the University of Geneva School of Medicine, completing his residency in OB/GYN both in England and at Wayne State University in Michigan, USA.

He was an author or co-author of more than 360 publications in scientific journals and was editor or co-editor of more than 17 books. He belonged to all major organizations in obstetrics and gynecology and other scientific organizations. Notable among those were the American Gynecological and Obstetrical Society, Society for Gynecologic Investigation and the American Society for Reproductive Medicine.

At the ASRM he attended more than 50 annual meetings/congresses, served as chairman of several post graduate courses, chairman of the annual scientific committee, member of the Board of directors, chairman of the publications committee, chairman of the International affairs committee, and the President of the ASRM (1990-91), as well as the president of the ASRM Affiliated Society of Reproductive Endocrinologist and Infertility (1989-90). He was the first delegate of ASRM at the House of Delegates of the AMA where he represented ASRM from 1991 to 2007. For his many services to ASRM, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Award in 2009.

He was also the first President of the Michigan Society of Reproductive Endocrinologists. Additionally, he served as a member of the FDA Fertility and Maternal Health Drug Advisory Committee, as a member and Chairman of the Reproductive Endocrinology Study Section of the National Institutes for Health, and as a member of the Population Research Committee of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. Dr. Moghissi was the recipient of numerous research grants from NIH, WHO, and the pharmaceutical industry. He served as a member of the editorial board of many journals in the field of Reproductive Medicine.

Dr. Moghissi served as a consultant to the World Health Organization and on two task forces of this organization in Geneva, Switzerland. He has received many honors. He was listed in Who’s Who Men of Science, Who’s Who in the Midwest, Who’s Who in American Education, Who’s Who in the United States, and Who’s Who in the World. He has been recognized as one of the best physicians in his field by Town and Country magazine, Conde Neste, and Good Housekeeping magazine, as well as the publication titled “The Best Doctors in America”. He was also the recipient of the National Presidents Award of the Michigan State Medical Society, and Wayne County Medical Society’s Professional Achievement Award. Dr. Moghissi established the first Comprehensive Infertility Clinic at Wayne State University/Hutzel Hospital and the first successful In Vitro Fertilization program in Michigan.

He served as Chief of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Harper-Grace Hospital, Hutzel Hospital and as Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Wayne State University and the Detroit Medical Center. Other honors include the Pathfinder’s in Medicine Award, Weiner Recognition Award, Distinguish Service Award and Lifetime Achievement Award from Wayne State University and an annual lectureship in his name in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Wayne State University. He has served as visiting Professor in many states as well as Latin American countries, the Middle East, Europe, and China. In 1997 Wayne State University honored Dr. Moghissi by establishing the Kamran S. Moghissi, M.D. Chair in Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility.

He will be greatly missed by ASRM and the reproductive medicine field.
